Transrectal Sonography of Benign Prostatic Hyperpiasia

Abstract

The aim of this article is to see what sonographic changes occur in the prostate gland with the development of benign prostatic hyperplasia(BPH). Five normal young volunteers were studied by transrectal ultrasound for normal anatomy of the
prostate.
20 patients with obstructive urinary symptoms and an enlarged benign-feeling prostate on digital rectal examination underwent trasrectal ultrasound evaluation.
The principal change of the hyperplastic prostate was marked hyperplasia of the inner part of the gland, which appears relatively hypoechoic, with compression of the outer part, which is isoechoic. After transurethral resection(TURP), the
prostate
largely regained normal appearance, thus indicating that TURP is a reconstructive rather than a destructive operation. It is concluded that transrectal ultrasound of the prostate is a method of choice for diagnosis of bening prostatic
hyperplasia,
in
relation to McNeal's anatomic zones and areas of the prostate.
